If Rian Johnson actually did try something new, it could have been interesting, but all he did was shut down everything The Force Awakens set up.

It was literally "just another job" to him, which creative work should never be.

I completely agree with Rian's stance on Snoke and Kylo, in not wanting to repeat the same patterns and giving Kylo a different story. The issue was, the fact Snoke was this mysterious character who had created this first order from the ashes of the empire. It was an already layed down mystery and presumed answers we were hoping for that made this move unsatisfactory for many. Otherwise, I think it was a great idea and incredibly bold move.

In other words, the premise I agree with, the execution, was not so good…

Again, I think most issues stem from the lack of story cohesion beforehand. Each movie was pretty much made seperate from eachother.

The usual banal and facile comments against Johnson after this video. RJ is an excellent director as his other films have borne out, especially Knives Out. However, what doesn't work is having a trilogy directed by (originally) three different men with wildly different styles and visions and expecting it to work. Personally I found Snoke (even the name is ridiculous isn't it?) to be a pointless recreation of Palpatine in Ep VII because that's basically what Abrams did – just pointlessly recreate everything from IV, so much so it got silly. RJ tried to make something original, depart from the expected norms and make a comment which was more mature than anything that had gone before. What he misunderstood is that Star Wars fans love their lore and were not ready to 'kill the past'. He didn't understand that he was not allowed to make his own movie (with a very mature and bold arc for Luke, which I personally believed in) but to fit in with the usual tropes.

His the problem with Kylo being the big bad of Episode 9. I felt he was not the same threat that I saw when he first appeared in episode 7. He lost to Rey in episode 7. At that point all fear of him as a villain was gone because the main character already beat him. Nothing from episode 8 indicate that he got any stronger to challenge Rey but everything indicated that Rey had gotten strong. So why should I be fearful that Kylo is going to be a threat to Rey and the resistance in episode 9 when he his track record with them is 0 – 2

Man with all due respect, don't you think it's been enough of all this TLJ hate whining?
You know, I didn't like the film either, but it's time to move on.
You can get more attention and respect from your followers by getting into more positive and entertaining subjects than going over and over again on the same.
Give us more fanfictions, more books analysis, more more lightsaber unboxings, even you know you could do w video covering some of the best SW based muevo covers and stuff.
Just really, it's time to move on from this….you are better than this!

Ruin Johnson never cared about Star Wars, why would he care about Snoke? His script must have been written in crayon.

If he doesn’t like Star Wars, then why did Disney and Lucas film think it’s a good idea to let him make a Star Wars movie and give him a trilogy to make (are they still letting him have his trilogy?)

I get his train of thought, it just didn't play out well because kylo ren didn't go through any huge ark. he was bad at the start and bad at the end. So what focus was he putting on him exactly? he also fucked up fin and po's stories… so I dunno what he substituted snokes story with

We should stop giving Rian attention. He lied his way through The Last Jedi, assaulted the crowd criminally even, and doesn't deserve any further attention. He'll say anything to be relevant.

Johnson's desire to not repeat the cycle of the OT is admirable, however, the execution is all wrong. With regards to The FIRST ORDER (while arguably a conceptually bankrupt idea in that it just copies the originals) and SNOKE– Both were already in play when Johnson was writing TLJ. Given that, BOTH story elements beg an answer. It was his job as a writer to make that interesting, not ignore elements that required explanation. How did the Empire survive in this new form? Who is this guy who is more powerful than the Emperor who also preceded him? Is he an original Sith pre-Darth Bane? Is he Plagueis who actually DID manipulate midi-chlorians to save his own life? Why is history repeating itself with Kylo following Vader to betray his master and murder the Jedi order?
It's fine to kill the character in order to shift focus to Kylo Ren and Rey, but utterly stupid to do so by not answering the question of who he is in an interesting fashion while doing so. Ultimately Johnson says "this doesn't matter" which adds to the disjointed feeling of this trilogy, because The Force Awakens clearly makes SNOKE a big deal. His character fundamentally DOES require explanation in order for the story to make sense. There is a rule in Improvisational comedy (reference Lam Neeson in LIfe's Too Short for an example of how to do it wrong). It's called "YES AND…" When you are telling a story with a partner (in this case Johnson and Abrams), it's important to to agree when a partner says something, otherwise you are fighting for control of the narrative versus working to create it together. Unfortunately both Johnson and Abrams did not do this with each other.
JJ's solution (a strand cast created and manipulated by Palpatine all along) is equally dumb, but only because he was handed a corpse which then could ultimately have no story consequence by explaining his relevance other than as a second banana to a new big bad.

I would have been fine with Luke walking away from everything after his jedi order failed if he didn't try to murder people for no reason, abandoning Han and Leia and if Ahsoka met up with him, they talked about Anakin and the she convinced him to change his mind, then he helps ben and tells him that vader was redeemed, then Luke kicks some ass like in mando. Also rey would need an arc but yea.

But Rian was the director, as Theory mentioned, he can make Snoke as interesting as he wanted to. If anything all Rian did was give us a reason to agree with him, by making Snoke an uninteresting character.

I'll give an example of a character I didn’t find interesting, but I made a fan fiction that made him interesting. If anyone remembers the original 4 seasons of Bakugan (if not this WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS), in the second half of Mechtanium Surge (the final season) I didn't find Gunz, Wiseman and Mechtavius Destoyer interesting. Wiseman and Mechtavius Destoyer were just very plain and boring villains who didn't have anything deeper to their characters and Gunz wasn't in the show long enough for me to care.

So I wrote an alternative second half of Mechtanium Surge where Gunz was a Gundalian and an illegitimate son of Emperor Barodius (the Antagonist of season 3) and I made Gunz a character motivated by revenge who became Wiseman. The reason why is so that both Gunz and Wiseman would have reasons to both look a like and exist in the story, without being shafted in just to sell more toys.

If Rian had such a problem with how boring Snoke was, surely making Snoke interesting would resolve his complaints, but then I remember that Rian cares more about making a movie, than he does about making a Star Wars movie. But that's just my thoughts, looks like something else I may rant about in a video.

Well, Rian, I get you didn't like Snoke, at all. And I didn't like your movie, at all. Rian simply can't do stories that have consequences beyond what he writes. He also fundamentally clearly didn't get how to write the characters that were established, and wasn't good at introducing new ones. GG Rian.

He found Snoke "fundamentally uninteresting". He was only the main Villain of the sequel trilogy. Lol. Then Rian got Luke Skywalker FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG! The Last Jedi was a train wreck that completely derailed the sequel trilogy.
