The Woke BBC is Incapable of Reform: It’s Time to Scrap The Licence Fee
Peter Whittle, Director of the New Culture Forum addresses the rot at the heart of the BBC:
“A brand new approach at the failing BBC was promised when the new Director General, Tim Davie took over last year, in the wake of the corporation’s attempts to drop patriotic songs from the Last night of the Proms.
“Metropolitan columnists, who tend to put great store in individual appointments, and who’s out and who’s in, saw this as an important new departure.
“Many of us were more sceptical. And we were right to be. Because we learned this week what the BBC’s idea of a clean sweep is: yet more wokery , yet more identity politics , yet more social engineering.
“It’s new plan for ‘diversity and inclusion’ includes pledges to mandate that its staff should be 50 % women, 20% Black and Ethnic minority, and weirdly that it 50% of it’s gay employees should be out. Equality opportunity is been firmly ousted in favour of equality of outcome.
“It wants 95% of its staff to undertake unconscious bias training – a useless and divisive example of critical race theory in action, and one which even the government has dropped.
“But most cack-handedly of all, the BBC now aims to get people to declare their social class, in a clumsy and frankly condescending attempt to make its self more relevant and in touch, less metropolitan and middle class.
“Good luck with that. You can see that in the BBC’s world of identity politics, gender, ethnicity and sexuality alone guarantee diversity. The fact that there is a total lack of diversity of views and opinions seems not to strike them at all.
“So, here’s a suggestion for the BBC: instead of using these criteria, why not recruit so that your staff ‘proportionately’ reflects political opinion in the country? Why not recruit on people’s self-declared voting intentions instead? Or how about instead proportionately reflecting the make up of the referendum result? 52% leave, 48% remain?
“Could you imagine that? A massive diversity of opinion which was truly representative of the country.
“We shouldn’t hold our breath. It will never happen. There is a quicker, less complex way of dealing with the inertia and intolerance of the BBC: scrap the license fee.”
