I am so glad my parents installed a pride in me for my country and my history and a respect for those that gave they’re lives for my freedoms. I would truly hate to be young today

Slavery, smallpox, napoleonic tyranny, the horrors of the first and second german empires, ottoman genocide in greece, the monstrosity of the soviet cold war. Each time Britain stood and won.

Small wonder that those who worship these historic horrors hate the UK and its heroes.

Having lived abroad for many years , on reflection the British or "English" culture has been much maligned by those who expect the State to "watch over us all " for everything and "watch over the rest " aswell. However, the caption "For the Many not the Few" does not reflect real life and often it is the few who provide for us all. The big issue has been the "broken promises" by those in authority , and the continuous promotion of a "Class" based society coupled with "scraps" handed out by generational governments
I mean seriously , 20% Tax on Goods , and a 45% tax on income. we would do well to look at our Governments as the source of our dissatisfaction and poverty

Absolutely superb, Peter. Well done to you (and Rafe and Emma!) You face all the main issues head on and repudiate all the criticisms of the left. I think it's fair to ask those who show no love for this country and have only negative views, why they continue to live here. As Douglas Murray says, we are happy to listen to criticism from those who wish us well, but are wise to reject them from those with ill intentions. Your list at the end was most welcome. Being 69 I was, of course, taught these things at school. However, one takes them for granted and cannot bring them all easily to mind. To have all of these achievements paraded in this way is quite breath-taking. We all have our own additions, of course. As you used some lovely pieces of Holst's music, I would have included his name, along with Vaughan Williams. But that's a game without end! Thank you.

I do wonder what my grandparents would have thought about the state of the country. He was in the navy during WW2 and think he'd be pretty disappointed in people's heretics. It's videos like this that gives me hope Britain will overcome these trying times.

My grandfather was a British Colonial Officer helping administer a district in Nigeria in the 50s helping them transition to independence. He put down a riot to independence! They did not want us to leave! Will you hear this narrative on BBC? Education? Not on your life.

Britain was the country which gave the world the industrial revolution all the worlds sports the first sci fi fantasy and horror novels the cure for smallpox the creation of penicillin several new scientific disciplines such as darwinism began here the world wide web came from here. How did they manage to convince people that this is a country that gave the world nothing but concentration camps?

Actually this made me feel quite emotional because we should be proud of our heritage and not be made to feel ashamed by our history any more so than any other country .

Given the slight over representation of Scots in your list of what makes Britain great – maybe not referring to the UK as England (not you Peter) might serve to make some Scots (like me) feel our not so small contribution to Britain's greatness not taken for granted.
It's my opinion patriotism was well established in Scotland but the indifference to and neglect of people like Mrs T (great as she was), to Scottish sensibilities damaged that british patriotism, especially in the case of Mrs T — as she did rather own patriotism. Anyway – great program, couldn't agree more.

Some people seem to forget that Britain was an imperial colony for longer than it was an imperial coloniser. Or perhaps they're well aware of the fact and it's that part of our history they hanker after.

We also invented the bob sleigh and competitive skiing, which is not bad for a country with no reliable snow.

The rot really set in with the Attlee government of 1945. Yes, he created the NHS which is a good thing, even if it has turned into a bottomless money pit. But everything else proved to be an unmitigated disaster. One of the main reasons why we fell so badly behind was thanks to nationalised industries. Everything was scooped up ranging from coal to road transport. The result was a completely stagnant country ruled by closed shop unions who with their unparalleled power did what lefties always do. They destroyed what worked and then stood back, wondering what to do next. In the absense of any constructive thoughts, they started swinging the hammer again.

Once they were cut down to size, they are generally now fairly sensible. Their workers certainly are. By then, it was too late. The British car industry was destroyed, never to rise again. Sure, we build lots of cars here and do it very well, but not for British owners. Now they are all foreign. Jaguar Land Rover is owned by Indians while Rolls Royce and Bentley are owned by BMW and VW. TVR appears to have vanished and Bristol always was eccentric, so who knows if it is still going or not.

Successive Conservative governments have followed this centralised approach to a greater or lesser extent. Once Margaret Thatcher finally cottoned on to what the EU was really all about, she was swiftly dispensed with by the grey, uninspiring and generally wet men around her. She had more testosterone than the whole sorry lot put together.

Even so, the real damage was done by Blair. He gave away our opt out to the Social Chapter and after that, the EU could run the whole show and Blair did what he liked. If anybody made a fuss, he would shrug and say it was an EU rule. Nothing to do with him.

He also filled a lot of empty heads with ideas of uni degrees. The idea of 50% of kids being clever enough to go to uni is laughable were it not so sad. So we have ended up with an eroding of standards coupled to nonsense degrees. The end result is people starting out in life with debts bigger than some mortgages and no prospect of getting meaningful, well paid work.

To put this in context, we had a Belgian student on a work placement. He wrote better English than our uni student studying PPE. The English lad had to write a few paragraphs. The only one that was comprehensible was his name, address and date of birth. The rest was complete gibberish. He had no business being at uni and to be honest, should have been in a special school teaching him to write his mother tongue. Needless to say, he qualified with quite a decent degree.

A lecturer who used to come in freely admitted that most of his students were illiterate and that he had to try and get the drift of what he thought they were saying and mark accordingly. If this is uni material, what must the rest be like?

Yes, we have no pride in our country in general and being English in particular. Anyway, I must go. I want to buy a flag pole in order to fly my flag.
