Correcting myself: I said the XP is split between both primary and secondary jobs but that's not right it's primary only. Thanks to the guy who pointed that out.

I will probably get some grief for not ignoring the issues here – I think I was pretty fair but would be interested to hear your takes! Mark

Oh dear… Backing out of boss fights to grind 🙁 I thought I left grinding behind years ago when I spent hours doing it on the PS1 release of FFVII. I might have to give this a skip for that. As you get older you want to grind less

Sounds like a good game series. Unfortunately, I can't stand the ridiculous character models. They look like kids playing dress-up. Always put me off. Beautiful environments etc. Stunning art style everywhere aside from the hideous characters

In reference to sub jobs and main jobs. ASFAIK sub jobs do NOT level, and do not affect exp for main jobs in anyway, so you needn't refrain from equipping one if you wanna focus on the main job.

I also think the comment about the side quests no too far after the time stamp is a little disingenuous. Some side quests lead to brand new dungeons or "harder" enemy encounters that you would have never done in the main story. There are definitely "errand quests" but even the prologue area has an optional dungeon a couple optional "hard" fights, and at least one side quest that has a story that continues throughout the game.

I don't disagree with the end score though. Just a little surprised with the misinformation or misleading points in the review.

This looks fun, but I have a hard time getting into newer RPGs. I grew up playing FF7 and loved everything about it. I saw there is a demo and will check it out! Thanks for the content as always!

I've put about 6 hours into this at the time of writing this and I am loving it. It certainly isn't perfect, but I love the Final Fantasy remakes on the DS, (not to mention the first two Bravely games), so getting to play this spin off on my big TV is awesome. There's just something about the low-poly art and play style that I enjoy. It stipes away all the added baggage that the new Final Fantasy games have acquired along the way, and takes the series into an almost alternate history direction.

While playing the Demo, I enjoyed the game but I couldn't get round the character models over the backgrounds but after buying the full game and playing some more, the models grew on me and now I enjoy them

I bought the physical version of this on launch day and I have to agree as a huge FROM and Souls-Like fan I’m all for difficulty and overcoming a challenging encounter, however I feel like BD2 is arbitrarily difficult and the only option you have while playing it, is to grind out levels in order to stay competitive.

I can completely understand why people don't like grinding….but I love it.

You can tell this game is designed for Eastern audiences. They loved it & want this challenge whilst Western audiences seem to expect these games to play themselves.

Jeez a bit of a disappointing score, but can't comment on the review accuracy as I haven't played it yet. However, you guys are usually money so I'll lean you guys over a developer. Also default jrpg was a good chuckle.

This is pretty in line with the other balanced reviews I've seen (e.g. discounting the sites that said it was perfect or trash). It's a decent jrpg, but the sidequests are boring, the difficulty spikes with the bosses requires a dramatic amount of grinding, and the story is cliche. But at least it seems like they've cut down a bit on the excessive padding in the first… or at least spread it out so it's a smidge less noticeable.

I have about 9 hours on this game. I don't have that much experience with JRPGs, but of the ones I've played, combat is what usually hooks me the most, story being a close second. So far, I've really enjoyed both aspects in 'Bravely Default 2.' There's a lot of grinding for leveling up, but since I enjoy the combat so much, I don't have a problem with that. Besides, progression is really tangible, and it makes the grind rewarding. I can see myself playing the game until the end.

I loved playing the first game. I never got to finish it thanks to my toddler at the time getting ahold of my 3ds and deleting my file sobs silently lol But yes the grind is real, but it was an amazing experience. I'm looking forward to getting BD2 on the switch. Great review and awesome gameplay footage. Thank you, Mark.

I LOVE the ability to skip cutscenes. I usually don't, but the option is so wonderful. The camera is frustrating, especially in the field, but it's nowhere near as terrible as Pokemon Sword/Shield.

I just can't get into the character design. I really struggle to take chibi characters seriously if you're also supposed to be intimidated by them, or think they're old and wise. Which is a shame! Because the rest of the art – especially the environments – is really lovely

Got this game as a pre release and have dumped over 60 hours into it. I have done alot of side quest and over lvled bc that's wat I do lol. I am getting close to the end though but I enjoyed alot about this game. Great review Mark

Picked up the game because I enjoyed the first two, but had to stop playing this third entry because the art style was off-putting. It looks like a generic Unreal engine based game, which is a shame because the underlying game system still looks solid.

I feel like some punches are being pulled here. My roommate who LOVES this game series got it & has been playing it. When I asked her rating, she said "about a 7 or 8." LOL! So clearly there must be something that long time fans don't like about the game but none of the reviews are really telling us. Difficulty spikes & grinding are in all JRPGs but maybe its just worse in this 1? A "JRPG" style of game I really love on Switch is called Battlechasers Nightwar

Overall enjoyed the game a lot and some of the plot twists were very well done, I do wish there was a summon job to show off more of the switchs power and though the talking can be a tad stiff at times it didn't spoil the game, I also like how flexible you can be with the jobs and there is a bit of a cheese strat for people who want to beat the end game and see the story without putting much thought into it, but for those who don't want to use it, the end game becomes a fun hard challenge. and last but not least the amount of different boss's Music is one of the very very best things you have to play it with headphones on.

Glad I waited b4 buying. Gameplay I could get into but theres no reason to make a $60 game with cut scenes that dont compare to ps1 games. Fenyx rising has quality cut scenes, starlink has quality cut scenes, this game? Cheaps out w in game cut scenes. The majority of which are a few characters standing in front of an interchangeable background. Feels very cheap for a 60$ game. A shame. I really was looking forward to it. I may axtually refer people to earthlock and earthlock 2 over this. Seems like a better value honestly.

I haven't had to grind on this game yet, though some bosses took a few tries since I was clearly way under-leveled when facing them (Bernard, Galahad). I haven't finished it, I'm currently on chapter 4, but if you get to a difficult boss just think about the fight and lower the difficulty for that boss.

I really wanted you to love the job system or talk more about it, it's so good!

Fair review, I would have given it a bit more personally.
It's undeniable charm overrules some of it's flaws, having a classic jrpg with qol improvements for the modern age is a wonderful thing.

Great job

I overall thought the game was excellent, I loved the combat and the strategising it took to take out certain bosses. My three biggest complaints with this game is the underwhelming basic story, the side quests are legit terrible and it pulls that "a nasty surprise jumps out of the treasure chest" a bit too often.

The game really opens up once you get the hang of the job system and the battle system during Chapter 1. I was totally destroyed a couple times, well almost every boss fight at first, but that was exciting. The first time I beat a boss without multiple attempts was exhilarating. And once you realize how vast the job system is, the grind is much more pleasurable, in fact at this point 30 hours in I may be playing specifically for the grind. I think it's easy to be alienated from the game at first as kind of generic but the characters won me over quickly, especially the dialogue and the voice acting.

As a fan of both Bravely Default and Bravely Second, I'm thinking of either skipping this one or waiting for a price drop/sale. This one just doesn't feel as experimental as the first 2 games, and the weight system is kind of a drag to me.

The part about speed isn't entirely true. You get random tips and one of them explains speed. And you also have a sort of guide to go by in your inventory that has all of these tips in it. And it DOES tell you thats there.
