I blame more Target than Nintendo. Target screwed the fans since they sold them to walk ins and not to online and some did not limit. Yes I do agree, Nintendo does give low stock and that affects it as well.

I will say this, as having worked at Target, I would not blame Nintendo as much for this one. Target is known to cater to scalpers. Publically they try to say they will limit quantities and such, but to employees they will say (from corporate) to sell them whatever they want. Even if they do "limit" per customer (which I only ever saw happen once) then they have the scalpers come as a group (think "families" of 20+ people) and have one person pay but have you ring up each person as a separate transaction to still clean out Target. Other stores take a stronger stand, but even then most just want the money and don't care who they sell to.

The internet has really ruined the collectable market. Seems like everything is immediately in the hands of scalpers now, and the people making stuff don't care. There's a lot of ways these companies could make sure consumers who actually want these things could get a hold of them but they never try. As long as it sells, who cares if nobody actually gets to enjoy stuff. It kills consumer interest though, nobody wants to get into a hobby where you can't buy anything without being ripped off.

Also I don’t think bots were that much of a problem. Since most Target stores just sold their cards in store- (since the app and we store was overwhelmed by the web traffic for this product), the reseller “bots” ordered weren’t reserved by local Target stores anymore than the fan who merely wanted one or two packs. Target should have fine with a completely online preorder system weeks in advance to be shipped from their national distribution centers, or a completely in store system where it’s known to be first come first serve.

[sigh] Get your PowerSaves and Power Tabs ready, animal crossers, it seems that's the only way to go (you can buy direct from Datel, and the scalpers are after the genuine amiibo.)

The scalpers recognized an opportunity and took advantage of it. It's the systems for how these things are sold, not Nintendo's fault.

I got the European editions about a month before these were announced. Wow releasing this collaboration FIVE YEARS LATER, it's not surprising to see this result, not to mention that they GREATLY devalued the villagers in NH, which is proving to be most disappointing game in the series since amiibo festival.

Needless to say, bad move no matter what angle you look at it.

Might as well buy some NFC tags and make your own cards. It won't make up for missing yet another Nintendo 'collector's item', but at least you won't miss unlocking the content (which is already in the game you paid for via a "free" update.) Nintendo left us little choice.

I used to work for target. They've never been big on enforcing limits like "2 per customer". Back when Poke'mon cards were super hard to get when a shipment came in we weren't allowed to purchase them, or set any aside for employees. So I used to call a friend he'd come in and buy up all the packs. If they said limit 2 per customer per visit he'd say "Really are you going to make me step out of the store and come back through over and over? Cause I'm going to buy them anyway." And they'd always just sell them. Then we'd flip them for about double retail. I made more money at my job selling cards then working. I remember when the card crazed died I quit.

They apparently all showed up at out of stock after the first like 30 seconds. But after refreshing the page and spamming the checkout button for a bit, I was luckily able to secure a pack. Overall it was not well executed.

I tried leaving a review and it was gone within seconds. Also on a side note, I know Nintendo won't do it but it would be cool to have an Aggretsuko Sanrio Pack with villagers based on the popular characters.

This is nuts. How crazy scalpers get.
I love Sanrio too but I don’t think the amiibo cards are worth it. I wish the Sanrio characters were villagers then I can see why ppl would really want them.

Yesterday at Target I saw a shelf full of animal crossing Sanrio Amiibo cards here in New York. Didn't realize that these cards were so rare I would have bought like 2 packs. Give it about a month and they will triple the supply, the shelf will be full again at least in Big cities. Smaller cities it depends, you may be out of luck, a lot of smaller stores do not like the risk for newer items.

This isn’t entirely Nintendo’s fault, blame Target, any pre order they do it sells out in seconds because of bots. Also their ridiculous preorder times don’t help either. I remember I had to preorder a Star Wars figure at 3 AM and it sold out in seconds. Thankfully I managed to get it but I felt sorry for anyone who didn’t.

I was lucky, I managed to score 2 of them after 20 minutes of fighting for it on the apps. It was the only thing I wanted for my birthday. In the spirit of Animal crossing I gave the second pack to my best friend of many years.

Best way to keep them to two per customer is to have em locked up and have an employee be the one to get them out for the customer

I was lucky with my Target. I live in a small town (which is a bonus) and the one in charge of cards at the tech desk was telling Scalpers to F off lol. So I was able to grab one. They really need to fix this issue with these bloody scaplers. Its a freakin nightmare

I luckily grew out of this before the Internet was around. Distributing collectible cards via brick and mortar shops or capsule machines for a quarter is still the best way to handle this kind of thing. It's much easier to limit scalping as it's more expensive to scout individual locations as opposed to setting up a bot on one website.

My sis tried to get them 9am on the dot. Her orders didn't go through. She had to resort to $40 eBay. Worse, people who didn't follow the rules (Ordering online for pickup) got the cards, got the entire shipment in some cases and robbed legitimate people of their cards.

Can someone explain to me why this wasn't a DLC? Just buy the Sanrio stuff through the Switch. One thing I hate about Amiibo (and the rest of the toys to life) is that it's physical DLC. Also how come Nintendo doesn't re-release Smash Amiibo as cards? I can understand the figurines….but how come there aren't cards? The bootleggers can clearly do it.
