Sounds like WotC had a chance to make money off the book but decided instead have them become competitors instead.

Does not have to be with WotC. I can create a campaign world LEGALLY using D&D Game mechanics. Goodman Games has done this for years. I have an IP attorney and have certain things green lighted because of something similar going on.

So relieved I didn't need another heartbreak today I taught myself how to read with dragonlance novels

If you’d’ve said any campaign settings other than Drgonlance or Eberron I would have been excited.

I will never do another Kickstarter for an rpg. I have been burned so many times, with books coming out almost a decade late, low quality products, unmet goals, etc. There are some interesting looking titles in the Kickstarter line right now but I can wait until they're actually published – and reviews are available – before I spend money on these things.

It shouldn't be 5e. They should make it ADnD 2nd ed revisited. Keep the Dragonlance feel with a rule set not tied to Wizards of the Woke.

if D&D can be taken over by people who arent Activists or claiming that Orcs = Black people = racist, then 100% they get my money

Noone ever needed WotC, only the rules sets are needed, and those are available from before WotC got their claws into D&D. Who cares about WotC, they are irrelevant. Only the players and the DM matter.

I never realized Hickman was such an absolute Chad. I used to read the Dragonlance novels when I was a teen, even got the campaign boxed sets (though never got a group to play with back then).

I recently (a year or two ago) got back into D&D, and was utterly devastated that 5th edition sucked so much and everyone was basically the same, was disappointed even further with all the kowtowing to Wokeism forced into it. (Not "creeping" as you said, but actually forced.) Coming from TSR's AD&D 2nd Edition, I quickly grew to hate WotC stuff and ended up dropping it altogether. To my players' chagrin, I've never watched a Critical Role episode, but from what few clips I've seen it's basically Homestuck dressed in D&D. One of my players was particularly troubled that I defaulted to evil races being evil, and after he got rather belligerent about it, I just gave up. Figured I was "behind the times" or whatever, and I didn't care to get "with the times" if it meant sacrificing all the stuff he wanted me to.

It might be Schadenfreude, but I have to say I'm pretty happy anytime WotC gets pushback for ruining a great system.

-"Could this be the start of a new trend?"

God I hope so. Let's just hope it doesn't go the same way as the last time, with Paizo and Pathfinder. I loved (and still love) Pathfinder 1st edition, more than any D&D edition, but then they tried to out-WotC WotC when 5th ed started outselling them. Now I can't look at a 2nd edition sourcebook, so choked full of condescending wokery, without feeling the conflicting urges to either cry or vomit. Or both, and that's not pleasant for anyone.

Alot of people seem to talk like D&D is the only RPG system in existence. It's a really good system for fantasy campaigns (not anything else, really), but you could use other systems to play the same setting you would in D&D. I can see how Dragonlance wouldn't necessarily need WoC. Maybe the Dragonlance creators want to cater to multiple RPG systems. Or even make their own system.

You're crap channel is only based on racial outrage. You're monetizing the "great replacement" theory in games and comics. You really should be ashamed.

I mean, the sky-pirate genre is one that I've never really cared to much for. It's just not a variant of fantasy I've enjoyed, but hey, if it reaches it's niche audience, good for them. Art is always best when creators create for the sake of their own enjoyment. I don't mind some new-age fantasy things going on right now. I mean, WotC did announce a new, art-deco, film noir gangster setting for Magic: the Gathering, and I actually think that's a cool idea. It's neat when fantasy can experiment with other genres we wouldn't have thought of. At the same time, I do feel like companies like Hasbro holding a monopoly on the creativity lately is making the gaming scene a bit plain. So, good for this team for making their own project. I hope it goes well for them, but I'll admit it's not really for me. I love their more traditional Dragonlance, but sky-pirates is always an acquired taste for me.

After what WOTC did to Ravenloft, I am more than happy to only buy 3rd party work.

So is this a good sign? Because I feel like our voices would have more value if we made sure the good stuff actually makes money while the bad stuff still flounders.

I know it's obscure, but I'd love a campaign setting set in their Darksword universe; and yes I know about Darksword Adventures (in fact I own a copy it was one of the first RPG books I ever bought as a kid!) but I mean a workable real one.

Try Symbaroum rpg by Free League Publishing. It's dark and gritty and definitely not PC.

Fun fact: Wizards literally can't do anything about it. Open Game License. Fun little thing from back in the 3.5 days. Its how we got Pathfinder.

WOTC has been destroying everything they touch. I love these writers. Dragonlance was my first novels. They will always hold a special place in my heart.
