Hungray elections: President Viktor Orban casts vote in general election – The Ukraine war has dominated Hungary’s election cycle, with incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban positioning himself as the man who can guarantee peace by keeping his country out of the conflict. Orban is seen as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, having spoken out against EU sanctions on Russian oil and gas while banning Ukraine-bound weapons shipments from Hungarian territory. Meanwhile his opponent, pro-EU conservative Peter Marki-Zay (pictured top right), 49, believes Hungary has been turned too far towards Russia and should be joining the likes of Poland and supplying arms to Ukraine. He is leading a six-party alliance in a bid to finally oust Orban, one of Europe’s longest-serving rulers. According to the latest poll by the Zavecz Research agency, Marki-Zay is within striking distance at 36%, just three points behind Orban’s ruling Fidesz party, on 39%. Polls will close at 5pm GMT today.
